More than 30 percent of people in Germany have a migrant background, while at the same time nationalist and misanthropic narratives are gaining prominence. The German-Italian photographer addresses these tensions through a visual investigation that interweaves historical and contemporary perspectives on migration.
From the launch of the guest-worker-system in 1955 to contemporary settings such as industrial sites and gastronomic establishments, he weaves together documentary photography, texts and historical images into a multi-layered narrative about migration in Europe and its social and spatial implications. These changes are particularly evident in southern Italian villages characterised by depopulation.
Furthermore, the photographer’s personal connections are woven into the research, opening up a window onto individual questions and experiences concerning belonging, identity and otherness. Stranger you become illustrates that these concepts are subject to an ongoing process of social negotiation.

Oltre il 30% della popolazione tedesca ha un background migratorio, mentre allo stesso tempo le narrazioni nazionalistiche e misantrope stanno acquisendo sempre più visibilità. Il fotografo italo-tedesco affronta queste tensioni con una ricerca visiva che intreccia prospettive storiche e contemporanee sulla migrazione.
Dall’avvio del Gastarbeitersystem nel 1955 fino a luoghi contemporanei come impianti industriali e locali di ristorazione, egli condensa fotografia documentaria, testi e immagini storiche in una narrazione complessa sulla migrazione in Europa e sulle sue ripercussioni sociali e spaziali. Questi cambiamenti sono particolarmente visibili nei villaggi del Sud Italia, segnati dall’esodo.
Inoltre, nella ricerca confluiscono riferimenti personali del fotografo, che aprono uno spazio a domande ed esperienze individuali tra appartenenza, identità e alterità. Stranger you become mette in luce che questi concetti sono oggetto di un continuo processo di negoziazione sociale.
